So what is this celebration all about? It’s the French word for Fat Tuesday — commonly also referred to as Shrove Tuesday — referring to the day before Ash Wednesday, a day of repentance, which signals the beginning of Lent which is 46 days before Easter Sunday. After the days of Carnival, which begin on Epiphany, January 6, Mardi Gras is the last day and night of celebration and indulgence before the austerity of the Lenten season when, according to tradition, the devout focus on fasting, prayer and self-denial leading up to the Holy Week.
